In March 1945, the school was damaged by enemy action and a damage survey was carried out. Finally on 8 and 9 May the school was closed, due to ‘Victory in Europe’ celebrations.
Additional material about the East End during the Second World War, including photographs, oral testimonies and audio-visual material, can be found at the library of the Imperial War Museum.
Riot and Unrest
Civil disorder occasionally breaks out in most cities for social, economic, religious and political reasons. There have been a number of major disturbances in the East End. They occupy the attention of the media, the politicians, police and sometimes the army, as well as contemporary observers. Spitalfields was the scene of at least three major riots in the eighteenth century: in 1719, 1736 and 1768, all for economic reasons. These are covered in the State Papers Domestic series 35, 36 and 37 respectively and in the Secretary of State’s Entry Books at SP44, with letters to and from the minister responsible for law and order (the equivalent office to the Home Secretary prior to 1782). These papers are available at TNA.
